Therefore Christian men be sure Wealth or rank possessing Ye who now will bless the poor Shall yourselves find blessing.ÿÞ James Edwards, a friend of mine from Santa Barbara, sent me a tape of his version of "Good King Wenceslas" which was cleverly done and also well-suited to the guitar. My only objection to his arrangement was that it wasn't long enough. I set about to lengthen it, and wound up with a couple of new variations; one of which was, unfortunately, quite difficult to play. A couple of tricks of the trade were used to make the piece more "arrangeable" and more "listenable." One of the most useful tricks is to lower the bass string {or strings} to allow open basses which, in turn, allows more freedom of movement in the upper voices. This works particularly well in the keys of D and G, and can even be used in the key of C by tuning the 6th string to C, and the 5th string to G. Since "Good King Wenceslas" was arranged in the key of D, the 6th string was tuned down to D. Another trick is to capo the piece up a bit, which usually makes it easier to play, and a little brighter and more cheerful sounding. Sometimes it helps to record the song with the capo at different fret positions, then listen to see which position sounds best. In measure 9, I employ a classical technique that you will learn if you ever take a music theory class. It's called contrary motion and means that the bass and treble lines move in opposite directions. This is usually preferred over similar or parallel motion. Measure 18 begins to take advantage of the lowered 6th string as a droning bass note, that gives a full and smooth sound to the first variation. In the second variation {measure 35}, the rhythm varies but the melody still begins on the D note, as in the previous verse. The third variation, which begins on the third of the chord {F#} to add interest. Measures 52 to 55 are played ponticello {near the bridge} then are repeated in measures 56 to 59 with a different sound that is achieved by moving away from the bridge and using legatos. It is interesting to compare the bass lines of the six different verses as well as the more obvious things that are going on above the bass. R.F.ÿz The first Christmas carols were earthy peasant dances with songs, which were not always approved of by church folks. In fact, a 17th century Scottish law made singing "filthy carols" punishable by a jail sentence. In the middle of the 19th century - at about the same time that Dickens wrote his famous novella "A Christmas Carol" - a few young preachers in London, including J.M. Neale, sparked a revival of carol singing. Their intent was to revive a country custom among people who had left their villages to work in Britain's smokey cities. They collected carols from all over Britain and other parts of Europe. Neale translated a Welsh New Year's carol into English and retitled it "Deck The Halls." Then he discovered a Swedish Easter carol and put completely new words to it about a medieval king of Bohemia named Wenceslas.
