Chrorus O Tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy O Tidings of comfort and joy. 2 In Bethleham in jewry This blessed babe was born And laid within' a manger Upon this blessed morn To which His mother Mary Did nothing take in scorn. Chrorus O Tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy O Tidings of comfort and joy. 3 From God our heavenly father A blessed angel came And unto certain shepherds Brought tidings of the same How that in Bethleham was born The Son of God by name. Chrorus O Tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy O Tidings of comfort and joy. 4 "Fear not then", said the angel "Let nothing you affright This day is born a saviour Of a pure virgin bright To free all those who trust in Him From Satan's power and might." Chrorus O Tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy O Tidings of comfort and joy. 5 The shepherds at those tidings Rejoiced much in mind And left their flocks a feeding In tempest, storm and wind And went to Bethleham straightway The Son of God to find. Chrorus O Tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy O Tidings of comfort and joy. 6 And when they came to Bethleham Where our dear Saviour lay They found Him in a manger Where oxen feed on hay His mother Mary kneeling down Unto the Lord did pray. Chrorus O Tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy O Tidings of comfort and joy. 7 Now to the Lord sing praises All you within' this place And with true love and brotherhood Each other now embrace This Holy tide of Christmas All other doth deface. Chrorus O Tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy O Tidings of comfort and joy.ÿÞ The interesting aspect of this arrangement lies in what's happening with the bass line. For the first pass, the bass supplies harmony notes to the treble or melody line. Sometimes it follows a descending scheme {the first six notes}, sometimes it moves in parallel motion {measures 12, 13, and 14}, and sometimes it moves in contrary motion {measures 18 and 19}. This is known as a free approach to harmonization, where the harmony notes simply fill in the missing notes of the implied chords. Other than the G#s, the piece is entirely diatonic to A minor {ABCDEFG}. Both G sharp and G natural are used, which is typical of many minor-key songs. The G# is part of the harmonic minor scale {in A: ABCDEFG#}, and is used to create harmony. Notice that it never appears in the melody; it's use is limited to creating chords or harmony - thus the name. In measure 21 the melody begins again, but it is now placed in the bass with block chords above it supplying the harmony. It's good practice to analyze the chords from their vertical note stacks. For example in measures 22, beat 3 is a first inversion F major triad. I elected not to put in chord symbols, because that's the convention for classical guitar music, so you're on your own when figuring out the chords. Keep in mind that many of those three-note chords above the bass melody are half-notes. Let them ring for their full value to achieve a legato feel. They also ring over the bass notes that don't occur directly beneath them. In beat 4 of measure 21, the bass note D has an E triad ringing above it. The harmony is therefore analyzed as an E7 over D. The song ends on a very jazzy-soundong Am6 chord for that cool yule effect. MERRY CHRISTMAS !!!ÿ+ The writer & composer of this carol are both unknown. It first appeared on one of the early carol sheets that were distributed throughout England at Christmas. The first version dates from 1770. If the comma is correctly placed, the meaning "God Keep You Happy" is clear." It is a form of greeting.ÿÿCGuitarNylon String Acoustic Guitarh@Standard@;72-(ÿÿ CFloatingTextLyrics#Times New Roman€See Performance NotesíY$Times New Roman€EADGBE6£b±Times New Romanÿÿ CGuitarInÿÿ CTempoMarkerÐ € € € P € ( ÿÿCSectionSymbol€$ ÿÿCSection2 $ €ÿÿ CDirectionÿÿCStaff6ÿÿ CPositionÿÿ CLineDataB€€B€€€€€ €#€ €!€€ €€B€€@€€B€€ €€!€€#€€€$€B €€€€€€¤€ €£€€¡€€ €€¡€€ €€€€€¡€€ ÿÿ CMusicBar €AVerseL€ €L€€L€€€2 Ë€€6€€!€€€€€€#€ €!€ € € €B€€@€€B€€ €€!€€#€€€!€B € €B€b€€€€¤€ €£€ €¡€€ €€¡€€ €€€€€¡€€ L€€L€€L€€€2å š €€'6€€€€#€€€€€ €€ €€ €€€#€€!€€B€€ €€!€€#€€@€€!€!€# €€`€€£€ €ƒ€ € €€¤€€€€€£€€€€€‚€€€€!€‚L€€L€€L€€€2´ l €BChorus€!-€€€€€€€ €€ €#€ €!€€ €€B€€!€B€€ € €€B€€#€€!€!€# €€ƒ€€`€€b€ €A€ €B€€ƒ€€‚€€€€€@€€c€€b€!€`L€€L€€L€€€2† K €€€€'6 €€€€€€€€€ €€ €#€ €!€A€€ €€B€b€€ƒ€€‚€€€€€£€ €¤€ € €€€€€€L€ €L€€€2e 8 $`€CVerse€!6 €€€!€B€€€ €A€ €€!€B€ €€!€B€€€!€B€€€!€B€!€€ €A€!€$!€€ €A€*€€€€€b€€b€€`€ €ƒ€ €‚€ €€€€£€€€€€‚€€ƒ€€`€!€b€‚€ €!€€€$!€b€‚€ €*€bL€€L€€L€ €L€#‚€€2R û €€$-€€€ €@€ €€!€ €€ €A€€€!€B€€€€ €@€€!€€ €@€€c€€`€€b€€c€ €@€ €B€ €b€€`€€ƒ€€€€€‚€€ƒ€€`€€ƒ€!€`L€€L€€L€€€2 Ó €DChorus€$0 €€€€!€@€€€€!€@€ € €€ €A€€€€!€B€€€!€B€€€ €@€€!€@€!€#€@€€b€€c€€b€ €b€ €`€ €ƒ€€‚€€€€€ƒ€€ €‚€€€€€`€€£€€b€!€cL€€L€€L€€€2í ¬ €€ €'0 €€€!€@€€€!€€€#€€€&€ €€!€ €#€@€ €!€B€€D€b€!€B€€B €€b€€`€€‚€€€€ €ƒ€ €‚€ €€€€¤€ €`€€L€€L€€€2Æ š  €€€$6€€€€#€€!€A€€ € €B€ €€`€ €€B€ € € € €!€€€#€€€€€ €€ €€%€E€d€€€%€E€d€€¤€€ € €€€ €€€€€L€€L€€L€€€Untitled!h@Bass+&!€€2 }€€ ArialTimes New RomanTimes New Roman
