ptab Greensleeves Liona BoydTraditional - English Traditional,Liona Boyd {Verse} - Craig Rogers {Bridge}Craig Rogers {Tellurian}craigrogers706@hotmail.comÿÚ * What Child Is This * This carol is part of a longer poem "The Manger Throne" by William Chatterton Dix {1837-1898}, an English businessman and writer of sacred verse. The song is an old sixteenth century melody {Greensleeves} which is twice mentioned by Shakespeare in his play "The Merry Wives Of Windsor", {Act II: Scene 1; Act V: Scene 5}. I What chid is this who laid to rest On Mary's lap is sleeping? Whom angel's greet with anthems sweet While shepherds watch are keeping. This, this is Christ the King Whom shepherds guard and angels sing Haste, haste to bring Him laud The babe, the Son of Mary. II Why lies He in such mean estate Where ox and ass are feeding? Good Christians: fear for sinners here The silent Word is pleading. Nails, spear, shall pierce Him thro' The cross be borne, for me, for you Hail, hail, the Word made flesh The babe, the Son of Mary. III So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh Come peasant, King to own Him The King of Kings salvation brings Let loving hearts enthrone Him. Raise, raise the song on high The Virgin sings her lullaby Joy, joy for Christ is born The babe, the Son of Mary. * GREENSLEEVES * 1 Alas, my love you do me wrong To cast me off discourteously For I have loved you so long Delighting in your company Chorus Greensleeves was all my joy Greensleeves was my delight Greensleeves was my heart of gold And who but my lady Greensleeves I have been ready at your hand To grant whatever you would crave I have both wagered life and land Your love and good will for to have * Chorus * I brought the kerchers to thy head That were wrought fine and gallantly I kept thee both at board and bed Which cost my purse well favouredly * Chorus * Greensleeves, now farewell adieu God I pray to prosper thee For I am still thy lover true Come once again and love me * Chorus * * GREENSLEEVES * 2 Alas, my love you do me wrong To cast me off discourteously For I have loved you so long Delighting in your company Chorus Greensleeves was all my joy Greensleeves was my delight Greensleeves was my heart of gold And who but my lady Greensleeves Your vows you've broken, like my heart Oh, why did you so enrapture me ? Now I remain in a world apart But my heart remains in captivity * Chorus * I have been ready at your hand To grant whatever you would crave I have both wagered life and land Your love and good-will for to have * Chorus * If you intend thus to disdain It does the more enrapture me And even so, I still remain A lover in captivity * Chorus * My men were clothed all in green And they did ever wait on thee All this was gallant to be seen And yet thou wouldst not love me * Chorus * Thou couldst desire no earthly thing But still thou hadst it readlly Thy music still to play and sing And yet thou wouldst not love me * Chorus * Well, I will pray to God on high That thou my constancy mayst see And that yet once before I die Thou wilt vouchsafe to love me * Chorus * Ah, Greensleeves now farewell, adieu To God I pray to prosper thee For I am still thy lover true Come once again and love me * Chorus *ÿm "Greensleeves" is the same song as "What Child Is This?" The two differences being, different lyrics and the raised sixth {F#} in the melody, which is characteristic of "Greensleeves". While "What Child Is This?" is normally sung with a natural sixth, a F natural.
