Scott Skinner in the 'pibroch' compositional form, which is actually an abbreviated analogue of the longer 'piobaireachd' form of the highland pipe's grand repertoire. That is essentially a theme, repeated with progressively more elaborate ornamentation, culminating in the use of the 'crunluath,' or 'crowning' movements {a very rapid ornamental flourish of eight or nine notes}, and then capped by a repetition of the basic theme. Attempting to mimic the fancier pipe ornaments on fiddle {or guitar, for that matter} doesn't work well, hence the shorter form. This arrangement, consisting of the basic theme, a simple variation and coda, was adapted from the playing of highland fiddler Angus Grant. It is fairly easy to play, though attention should be paid to proper phrasing to maintain the serious mood of the piece. The pull-offs and hammer-ons should be done briskly and sharply, invoking the sound of a highland pipe. J.S. This song is in DADGAD tuning with a slight difference. John Sherman tunes his guitar up one whole step or tone to EBEABE. He also uses a .017 or .018 gauge 3rd string to avoid breakage due to the added tension. This song can be played just as effectively in straight DADGAD.
